Cass Elliot was an American singer and actress. She was also known as Mama Cass and The Queen of Laurel Canyon. She was a member of The Mamas & the Papas, along with Denny Doherty, John Phillips, and Michelle Phillips.

Cass was the daughter of Bess (Levine) and Philip Cohen. Both her parents were the children of Russian Jewish emigrants from the Russian Empire. Her sister is singer, songwriter, and entertainment law attorney Leah Kunkel. Cass had a daughter, singer Owen Vanessa Elliot, with guitarist and baritone bluesman Charles Wayne Day.

Cass’s paternal grandfather was named William Cohen (the son of Yehuda Cohen and Hannah).
